Russell started his career as a competition lawyer with Clifford Chance in Brussels and London. In 2010 he joined Openreach, BT Group’s regulated access network division, leading on a range of commercial, regulatory and compliance issues. In 2016, he moved to BT’s Global business supporting colleagues around the world on competition matters. Since 2018, within BT’s CoSec team, Russell advises the BT Compliance Committee (a committee of the BT Group plc Board) on the company’s performance in delivering against commitments given to the UK telecoms regulator Ofcom around the legal and functional separation of its access division within the wider Group, and whether BT is achieving the right outcomes: for consumers, for industry and for other stakeholders.
He is passionate about social mobility, and is the diversity and inclusion champion for BT’s legal department and a governor at Norwood School in South London.
Russell is a solicitor admitted in England Wales and holds an LLB from the University of Edinburgh and an LLM from the University of Stockholm. He recently completed the ICA International Diploma in Governance, Risk and Compliance.
